When English clubs prepare to make away trips in European competitions, the reaction from the foreign press regarding the fans isn’t always the best.
Writing as if they were still in the 80’s, newspapers often call supporters ‘hooligans’ with no special reason, and the improved security often makes it to the news as well.
But there’s quite a different reaction from the Portuguese press today, as newspaper Record wrote a short story about the Liverpool fans.
The ‘exemplary supporters’ are highlighted by the outlet today, as they didn’t cause any trouble in the city before or after Liverpool’s 5-0 win.
Record recalls that other trips from English fans were marked by incidents, but this time, there was ‘exemplary behaviour’ from the Reds who visited Portugal.
They write that many fans arrived at the start of the week, visited tourists spots and had a good time with other travellers. On match day, they all contributed for a good environment and ‘showed no reason for extra security’.
This is obviously not the first time an English club visits Portugal in peace, but it’s still interesting how Liverpool fans actually got some praise this time. Maybe the locals are delighted with everything the Reds did last night, including the fantastic performance.
