Liverpool’s chances of signing Manchester City defender Eric Garcia are practically zero as he already has an agreement in place with Barcelona.

That’s according to Sport, who dismiss claims from England that the Reds could look to poach the centre back from their rivals.

Liverpool are on the hunt for defensive reinforcements after losing Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to long-term injuries earlier this season.

Joel Matip has also been struggling with niggling injuries in recent weeks, an issue which saw him withdrawn in the weekend draw with Fulham and Jordan Henderson slotting in alongside Fabinho in the back four.

Recent reports in England claimed that they were interested in Manchester City’s Garcia, who could be available on the cheap as his contract is expiring next summer.

Sport are having none of that, though, in their coverage of the rumour today.

They say that Liverpool ‘should not have many options’ to get Garcia as Barcelona have ‘paved the way’ for him to return to the club in January.

They are already working on an agreement with Manchester City, having failed to come to an agreement with them during the summer.

Garcia, for his part, has made it clear he wants to go back to the Camp Nou and already has a ‘complete’ agreement with the club in that regard.

Indeed, Sport say that it could be ‘put into writing’ as of January 1st, the date when the defender can sign as a free agent ahead of next summer.

Thus, Liverpool’s chances of getting him are slim to none as Barcelona appear to have covered every corner.
