Liverpool remain interested in a move for RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konaté this summer.

That’s according to SportBILD, who say the defender is on the Reds radar after they missed out on Dayot Upamecano.

Upamecano had been linked with moves all around Europe after several impressive seasons with Leipzig, and Liverpool were named as one of his suitors on several separate occasions.

However, he has now decided to join Bayern Munich, and so Liverpool have been forced to turn their attention elsewhere in their hunt for Virgil van Dijk’s long-term partner.

That man could be Konaté, with SportBILD stating that while the Frenchman is supposed to be Upamecano’s ‘successor’ in Leipzig’s defence, it is not yet ‘certain’ that he will stay at the club.

That’s because he has an exit clause worth around €45m, a fact that Liverpool, and rivals Chelsea and Manchester United, are aware of.

All three clubs are said to be ‘interested’ in the 21-year-old, particularly because they failed to get Upamecano.

Of course, this is not the first time Liverpool have been linked with the Frenchman.

We’ve covered several reports over the last year that they were keen, with it claimed back in December that he was seen as ‘financially affordable’.

Crucially that was post-pandemic, so it’s hard to see how that stance wouldn’t have changed come the summer.

It will all likely rest on Ozan Kabak, though. If he impresses during his loan spell from Schalke, then there will be little reason for Liverpool to move for Konaté, given they can get Kabak for cheaper and already have the deal lined up.

If the Turkish international struggles, though, expect a renewed effort for Konaté as the Premier League champions look to avoid a repeat of this year’s mistakes.
