Liverpool reportedly tried signing Gavi in the summer to bolster their midfield and there were various reports, at least in Spain, discussing the Reds’ interest in the Barcelona player.
Apart from the Merseyside club, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain wanted to secure the 18-year-old’s services. That won’t happen soon because Barcelona confirmed on Wednesday that they’ve secured a renewal.
The Spain international’s new deal runs down in 2026 and includes a €1bn release clause. He will sign the contract today.
Gavi turned 18 years of age on August 5th. Thursday’s AS states the La Liga side’s salary limit issue delayed his renewal, even though Mateu Alemany closed the negotiations two months ago.
The newspaper explains the Spaniard’s agent, Iván de la Peña, received many offers from abroad, including from Jürgen Klopp’s side, Bayern and PSG. Despite all this, the teenager prioritised staying at Barca.
AS’s claim about Liverpool and Bayern making offers for the youngster is backed up Mundo Deportivo journalist, Cristina Cubero.
In her column in today’s newspaper, Cubero states both these sides saw Gavi as ‘ideal’ for the Bundesliga and the Premier League.
The Reds ‘bet’ on the midfielder and made an ‘even higher’ offer than the one presented by Bayern Munich. Unfortunately for them, Gavi’s long-term future now lies at Barcelona.
Cubero adds that Liverpool were not the only English club that tried to sign Gavi, but doesn’t name the others.
