Liverpool and Chelsea were among the top clubs to have looked at Benfica players in the winter market.

That’s according to Jornal de Notícias, and they cover the interest shown by several clubs in Benfica’s Álvaro Carreras and Tomás Araújo.

The report states Liverpool, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich all contacted the Eagles to find out the conditions needed to negotiate for Carreras and Araújo.

Jornal de Notícias doesn’t make it clear which player these teams, including the Reds and the west London club, approached Benfica for Carreras and Araújo.

It won’t matter now because Benfica refused to respond to the interested parties as they had no plans to let the duo leave. Carreras and the 22-year-old centre-back have been regular players under Bruno Lage and are integral part of the Portuguese club.

The newspaper claims Liverpool, Chelsea, PSG and Bayern intend to return for them in the summer window. The 21-year-old left-back and Araújo has a release clause of €50m and €80m respectively.

Manchester United sold Carreras to Benfica in 2024 and included a €20m buyback clause.
