Liverpool wanted to sign Koni De Winter before he arrived at Juventus in 2018, according to his agent.
The Serie A side signed the 19-year-old from Zulte Waragem in 2018. He spent three years in their academy before making his way to the first team this season.
Although Andrea Pirlo included him in the Turin club’s squad last season, it was not until last month the defender made his debut for Juventus, when he came off the bench against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
The Belgium U21 international made his first start for Juventus in their 1-0 win over Malmö FF earlier this week.
Fabrizio Lioi, De Winter’s agent, has given an interview to Tutto Juve, and towards the end of the discussion, he was asked how his client’s move to the Serie A side took shape.
The representative mentioned Reds’ interest, when asked if there were any other clubs after his client.
“Yes, at that moment Koni was coveted by Anderlecht, Club Brugge, and all the biggest clubs in Belgium. And not only that, because Liverpool too, along with Leipzig and Salzburg were interested in him,” Lioi said.
De Winter’s agent has not mentioned why the right-back snubbed Liverpool and others to join Juve. However, he did specify the Old Lady’s plans for the teenager.
“During the Christmas holidays we will see each other and discuss the second part of the season,” the agent explained.
“The goal at the start of the season was to be a starter in the U23 and to try to make a debut with the first team, so I think it will be necessary to reflect on what to do in the next six months. Clearly, he will stay at Juventus, no matter in which line-up, but his career will continue with Juventus.”
