Pontus Jansson signed a new contract at Brentford in January and his current deal runs until 2023, with the Premier League side retaining an option to further extend it by a year.
The Sweden international has been a regular figure in the Bees starting lineup, making 40 starts in the league since the beginning of 2021/22 season.
His long-term future at Brentford is something that is discussed whenever he speaks to the media from his country. Having come up through the ranks of Malmö FF’s academy, and remaining a huge fan of the club, a return to his former club is generally a topic of discussion.
That has happened again when Aftonbladet interviewed Thomas Frank’s man, but a move to his old club ‘does not seem to be relevant at the moment’ for the centre-back.
“In terms of football, where Malmö are right now, it will be a little more difficult for me to move home,” Jansson said, as quoted by Fotboll Skanalen.
“Today, Malmö doesn’t even have a coach. I can’t speak badly about Daniel (Andersson) or Andreas (Georgson), who are close friends of mine, but the season this year is anything but approved.”
At the end of July, Miloš Milojević was shown the exit door after Malmö failed to overcome Lithuanian side FK Žalgiris in the Champions League qualifiers. Andreas Georgson is now the interim coach at the Swedish club.
With regards to Malmö’s decision to sack Milojević, the defender explained: “Of course, they won the cup, but to once again end up in a situation where you have to fire the coach is not approved. It hasn’t turned out well either. I am quite disappointed.”
