When Newcastle United decided to loan a player named Santiago Muñoz from Mexico, a few eyebrows were raised because of a certain film.

The striker never actually played for the Magpies, despite spending a year and a half with the Magpies, but that doesn’t mean he returned to his club empty handed.

Now back at Santos Laguna, the 20-year-old, the forward sat down with the media to talk about his time at Newcastle, and he’s very happy he did it.

Speaking to ESPN, he said: “A much more mature Santi returns, different from the Santi who left here. I take it like a master’s degree, and thank you to the club that helped have the opportunity at such a young age.”

Muñoz made it clear he ‘learned a lot’ during his Newcastle spell, both as a player and as a human being, praising the club’s philosophy in the process.

He mostly played with Newcastle’s U21s, where he managed to score one goal and pick up one assist in nine appearances during his time there.

The Texas born footballer added that being in England helped him realise what he could do as a footballer, pushing him to improve constantly.

He now returns to Santos Laguna ‘highly motivated’, wanting to show exactly what he learned at Newcastle, and bring it to his current team.
