While Young Boys lost to Manchester United 3-0 on Wednesday night, there were a lot of positives for the Swiss side to go home and evaluate, especially when going forward.

Had the likes of Guillaume Hoarau or Roger Assalé taken a couple of their chances, the story could have been a lot different.

There was also one shining light in that team, and that was former Newcastle defender Kevin Mbabu, who was charged of dealing with Anthony Martial and providing some pace and width down the right.

Many were impressed with what the 23-year-old had to offer, and perhaps someone at Manchester United might be kicking themselves for not seeing the potential back in 2010.

Relayed by Le Matin, Mbabu revealed that when he was 15, he spent a week at Carrington on trial, invited by the Premier League side from Servette.

He said: “It was like being a dream. I was presented to Pogba because he spoke French. He was 17. He showed me how to get around over there. He was really nice”.

Unfortunately, he never got to meet the first-team players, who were on preseason tour at the time, but he still very much enjoyed his stay.

Why Manchester United didn’t sign him up isn’t revealed, but Le Matin make it clear that Mbabu has only one goal in mind: returning to the Premier League.

As auditions go, his performance on Wednesday night (handball for the penalty aside) was rather quite good.
