River Plate president Jorge Brito has insisted his club would love to sign Nottingham Forest defender Gonzalo Montiel but he doesn’t want to create false illusions about a transfer happening.
Infobae cover comments from the River president today regarding various issues at the club, including potential transfers in and out in the near future.
One man who could be set to arrive is Montiel, who has found himself increasingly linked with a return to his former club as his loan spell at Nottingham Forest looks destined to be cut short in January.
He joined Steve Cooper’s side on loan from Sevilla in the summer and that deal includes a clause which would make it permanent if he featured in 50% of Nottingham Forest’s games this season.
Montiel started the season as a starter but has now been out of the picture for some time, with Cooper preferring other options, and his last appearance in the league coming back in October.
He’s only been in the squad in the eight league games since then, a clear indication that he does not appear to be a part of Nottingham Forest’s plans moving forwards.
That’s led to reports he will be sent back to Sevilla in January, but all indications are they do not want him either and could in fact sell him back to former club River Plate, where he came through as a youngster.
Brito has now admitted they’d love to make that happen but doesn’t want to create undue excitement for now.
“There is no doubt that we would like him to be here,” he said.
“But we have to be respectful, we cannot generate illusions about something that cannot materialise today.
“We are aware of Montiel’s stature, but that does not mean we can generate illusions. There is nothing true. We should not generate expectations of something that does not exist.”
