Back in March, we relayed a story from Foot Mercato in France who claimed that Watford were keen on the services of Lille left-back Hamza Mendyl.
At the time, the Hornets faced competition from Lyon, but that won’t be a problem anymore, seeing as the Ligue 1 side have since bought two players in his position (Ferland Mendy & Fernando Marçal).
While this could be seen as good news for Watford fans, that isn’t exactly the case, since Lille aren’t exactly interested in parting ways with the 19-year-old.
Despite suffering a very bad knee injury in April and Marcelo Bielsa bringing in another left-back in Fodé Ballo-Touré, Mendyl wants to make it at Stade Pierre Mauroy,
That is why, according to Libération in Morocco, Lille have rejected a ‘concrete offers’ from Marco Silva’s side for the youngster.
Expected to return at the beginning of October, the young defender is determined to fight for a place in Bielsa’s squad, even if it looks like an uphill struggle.
If he doesn’t make it, however, perhaps Watford will be there to save the day come January?
