Over the past couple of days, there have been some rumours circling around that John Obi Mikel could be returning to Chelsea as a coach.
The story originated on OwnGoalNigeria, and the idea was that Roman Abramovich had made him a promise that he could return to the club as a coach or an assistant to the first-team, currently managed by Frank Lampard.
This was allegedly all as a reward for his time at the club when he was a player there, but it’s all fake news.
That’s according to the player himself, who spoke to Nigerian outlet AOIFootball about the rumours.
He said: “Honestly I do not know where such stories are emanating from. I’m surprised at the news because no such discussion or meetings have taken place between me and the club’s hierarchy as regards to any form of coaching job.
“Chelsea will forever be like home to me and if such contact were made I would gladly make it known but for now they are all lies and rumours”.
The midfielder is currently playing for Trabzonspor in Turkey where he features regularly, having made 25 appearances since arriving from Middlesbrough in the summer on a free transfer.
During his time at Chelsea, Mikel played 372 games, scored six goals and assisted another 13 over the course of nearly 11 years.
