‘Letting him go was a gamble’.
That is, in essence, how Chelsea feel about the decision to loan Fikayo Tomori out to Milan for the remainder of the season with a €28m purchase clause attached to the deal.
The centre-back has taken Serie A by storm ever since being placed in the heart of the club’s defence by Stefano Pioli, and it’s been made very clear the Italians want to keep him.
The issue there is the €28m fee they have to spend, but with the club on its way to securing Champions League football next season, the extra money makes Tomori’s purchase ‘not an insurmountable obstacle’, say Corriere dello Sport.
Furthermore, ‘the intentions (to make the move happen) are all there from everyone’, and those in charge of such decisions ‘will talk about it in a few weeks’.
Since joining, Tomori has ‘never wavered’, producing performance after performance, and ‘everything has gone smoothly’ since the end of January for the Englishman.
Chelsea ‘noticed’ that ‘letting him go was a gamble’, but it’s a bit late for that now, and it seems extremely likely they’ll end up waving him goodbye come the end of the campaign.
