Trabzonspor are interested in a deal for Newcastle United left-back Jamal Lewis and have been urged by his agent to start negotiations now rather than waiting until January.

That’s according to Fotospor, who cover the interest in the defender today and whether he could end up in Turkey.

They explain that Trabzonspor manager Abdullah Avcı wants to sign a left-back in the January transfer window but has certain stipulations over who they target.

He needs to be young, born before 1997 due to TFF rules, but also have experience in a ‘top league’, be able to work with the players already in the team and, crucially, be available on loan.

That’s shortened the list considerably, but their search has drawn up one names, Newcastle left-back Lewis.

There’s a feeling he might not find many chances at St James’ Park following their takeover by the Saudi Arabian PIF fund, who are expected to put millions into the club once the transfer window opens.

That will leave plenty of the current squad on the outside looking in, and that could open the door for Trabzonspor to get the Magpies player.

His ‘managers’ have already been in touch with Chairman Ahmet Ağaoğlu about a move and reportedly told him: “Let’s start negotiations for him now. Let’s not wait until the half-time (January).”

They have warned that it might take ‘some time’ to convince Lewis of the move, while it’s not yet known what Newcastle’s stance will be.

If they are open to a deal, though, it’s believed that the ‘button will be pressed’ on the transfer during the next international break.
