Just yesterday, we covered the quotes from Fluminense’s new manager Marcão claiming he’s invited Chelsea defender Thiago Silva to join him at the club.

The two have known each other for a long time, and as they’re always in touch, the new boss wants the player back at the Rio de Janeiro side as soon as possible.

Now Thiago Silva was interviewed by ESPN Brasil today, and one of the topics was obviously this potential return to Fluminense. He claimed it may happen, but only after the World Cup in 2022.

“I came to the Premier League to try to keep myself at a high level, to have the opportunity to reach the World Cup. We don’t know tomorrow, but I’m getting ready, let’s see what will happen. After the World Cup, maybe we will have a return,” Thiago Silva told ESPN Brasil’s João Castelo Branco.

“I’m not promising anything, but it’s my idea, a thought that I have to end a cycle within football where I had some of my greatest happiness.”

The defender also recalled some of the great times he had for Fluminense.

“What most impressed me was my farewell, as I was able to post recently. In the last game, against Ipatinga, 53,000 people at Maracanã to see my farewell. During the week, Laranjeiras practically crowded, I spent hours and hours signing after training to try to meet everyone.

“It was a great affection that I had, and mainly because, right after my illness, the tuberculosis that everyone knows I had, they were the club that opened the doors for me to return to football. I’m super grateful to Fluminense, for all that I went through, and I hope that this return can happen.”

Thiago Silva’s contract with Chelsea expires at the end of the season, but there’s an option for a further year for the club to trigger. In other interviews with the Brazilian media, he’s already claimed it’s his wish to renew his deal with the Blues.

Since joining the Stamford Bridge side as a free agent last summer, Silva soon became the team captain and has 11 appearances for the club so far.
