There’s not a lot doubt regarding Gedson Fernandes’ future any more.

Besides having the Portuguese and the English media both reporting the transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, Benfica manager Bruno Lage revealed the midfielder hasn’t trained with the Eagles today.

Now as the Lisbon press analyses the transfer, Radio Renascença have invited former Benfica player and coach Álvaro Magalhães to give his opinion on the move.

“I think it’s good for him. He has the possibility of going to a big club,” Álvaro Magalhães told Rádio Renascença. “Bruno Lage has given Gedson several opportunities to play and we can say that he has shown all his quality. Now, being less used, it’s obvious that he wants to play.

“Tottenham are a club with great players and if you go there, you will have to fight for a place, but there’s no doubt that he’s a young man who has quality and I hope he’ll be happy if he leaves Benfica, and look for space in a football with another mindset. Let’s see if he’ll succeed.”

Gedson Fernandes is expected to join Tottenham Hotspur on a loan deal until the summer of 2021, with Spurs having an option to buy him.

The midfielder has only two league starts for Benfica this season, and that’s why the transfer to a big Premier League side has come as a surprise for many of the Lisbon club’s fans.

For the Eagles, it makes a lot of sense to loan him out now, since he wasn’t getting enough minutes with their side, and could either return with more experience or leave a big chunk of money in the back account.

Now it’s up to him to show Tottenham he’s worth it.
