Scott McTominay is already becoming the big attraction at Napoli, only weeks after his arrival from Manchester United.
Lofty statements have been made about him, despite the fact that the midfielder has made only one start. To be fair, that was an impressive showing against Juventus.
It wasn’t long ago that Napoli icon Marek Hamsik compared the United youth graduate to himself, due to his maverick approach to goalscoring and his ability in the final third. That was certainly high praise because it was coming from the man himself, but that has now been questioned.
Former manager and director Enrico Fedele has suggested that comparisons aren’t accurate and he has essentially brought all the hype to the ground.
He spoke to Televomero and AreaNapoli quote him as saying:
“Scott McTominay like Marek Hamsik? Let’s not joke, we’re blaspheming. They are very different players who absolutely cannot be compared.
“I believe that players are divided into two large categories. There are important players and indispensable players, who you can’t do without. Speaking of McTominay, I think he is an important player, but not indispensable.”
Whether Fedele is right or wrong is something only time will tell and something McTominay has control over. The hype has been huge since the move from Manchester United, and calming that down a little isn’t such a bad thing.
