While the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United celebrated on Sunday, it was a disappointing afternoon for Leicester City.
Defeat to United ensured they had missed out on the top four and Champions League qualification that looked a certainty earlier in the campaign.
However, a horrendous run of form since the return from lockdown and injuries to key players saw Brendan Rodgers’ side drop out and miss out on a seat at Europe’s top table.
The implications, of course, will be felt this summer. As well as missing out on a chance to compete with the best, Leicester have missed out on a boatload of money that comes with Champions League qualification.
A place in the top four is a guarantee of a nice slice of the money that the Europa League doesn’t even come close to competing with.
The disappointment at the King Power will be high but, it seems Leicester are not the only ones to suffer because of their failure because Borussia Monchengladbach have also ended up missing out.
RP in Germany have the story and explain that, had Leicester secured Champions League football it would have seen the German side pocketing a cool €1m.
Now, this is not down to some obscure transfer clause or anything of that nature but UEFA’s coefficient rankings.
At the moment Borussia sit 61st in those rankings with a score of 26,000. Leicester, for their part, sit in 70th with a score of 22,000.
However, had the Foxes qualified for the Champions League this would have pushed Borussia one place higher and earned them €1.108m more.
Instead, they watched on despairingly as Leicester threw it away, leaving Borussia as the second lowest-ranked team in next years competition, just ahead of Turkish side İstanbul Başakşehir.
