It’s always interesting to read rumours about smaller clubs from Portugal. Although they don’t get as much attention as the bigger claims, they’re often more accurate.
There’s been quite some insistence that CD Feirense midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo is wanted by several Premier League clubs lately. From the stories we’ve covered this year, Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Newcastle United and West Brom would all be keen, although there were never reports of a bid.
The Portuguese papers haven’t said much about the conditions of a deal, but O Jogo has a report making the situation clearer today.
The price to get Etebo would be only €10m, which is his release clause. But that’s only until the end of the season, because his contract will be expiring then.
It’s claimed that Feirense have already offered the player a new deal, but he hasn’t accepted it yet. So even though the idea was to make him more valuable during the World Cup next year, there’s no guarantee the club will be able to get any money for him.
Meanwhile, O Jogo makes a list of the many English clubs he has recently impressed. They mention Arsenal, Leicester City, Manchester United and West Brom.
Since we started covering the Etebo stories, it seems Leicester City are always the club to get a mention. Maybe it means they are really interested, and in two months they will be able to offer the player a pre-contract to get him in the summer.
Looking at the other clubs in the list, West Brom could be a reasonable destination, and have been linked more than once, Crystal Palace is also realistic, but perhaps the others are too big for Etebo right now.
Currently with three goals and one assist this season, maybe the Nigerian would be worth a free bet.
