Ron-Robert Zieler is one of many players who have joined a Premier League club to be a squad player, a back-up, and quickly found out they miss actually playing regularly.
Zieler has benefitted from injury to Kasper Schmeichel so has probably played more over the past year than he expected, but the German media believe he’s looking at the exit.
Bild report that ‘for weeks’ Zieler has been looking for a ‘clear statement’ from Leicester City, informing him whether he can leave the club this summer or not. They call it transfer ‘poker’.
Earlier this year rumours about the future of Schmeichel seemed much more serious than they are now. The Danish media got overly carried away and convinced themselves the goalkeeper was of real interest to Manchester United and could join Real Madrid… this was even covered on Danish TV.
Leicester themselves probably need clarity over Schmeichel, but may not want to offer him an extension to get that. Last renewing his contract a year ago, the goalkeeper’s deal runs until June 2021.
It’s hard for Leicester to give Zieler the clarity his desires when the club are aware Schmeichel may jump at the chance to join a bigger club should it present itself.
Stuttgart are interested in Zieler, but they’re also going to have to wait for an answer.
