Islam Slimani returning to Sporting is a popular theme in the Portuguese press, but not one which has been covered with much conviction. Before moving to Leicester City last summer, Slimani was an absolute hero for Sporting and a reliable man in front of goal, someone the team could, and repeatedly did, count on.
It’s only the excellent goalscoring form of Bas Dost, Slimani’s replacement which has seen Sporting avoid struggling upfront without the Leicester striker.
Just over a week ago Portuguese newspaper Record said the only likely way for Slimani to return to Sporting was on loan, with the Lisbon club having no big interest in splashing out a transfer fee.
Sunday’s edition of Correio de Manha covers English reports that Leicester could allow Slimani to return to Sporting, if the Foxes manage to sign Kelechi Iheanacho. Still, there’s no mention of a price that Sporting would be willing to pay, and as long as Bas Dost sticks around there’s no great need for the Algerian.
Even if Dost was to leave, there’s no way Sporting would be sending big bucks to Leicester, so the Premier League club would have to accept either a loan or a huge loss.
