Former Manchester United and Denmark goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has told the Spanish media he wouldn’t be surprised if Leicester City reached the Champions League semi-finals. Leicester City tonight meet Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the quarter finals.
Speaking to AS ahead of tonight’s game, Schmeichel was asked about Leicester City’s chances of making the last four of the Champions League.
The Dane accepts Atletico Madrid have the upper hand because of their 1-0 victory last week in Spain. However, Schmeichel believes if the Premier League champions can replicate what they did against Sevilla then they can progress.
“It’s an open match. Atletico has some advantage, since they won in the Calderón. But those who were here for the match against Sevilla for round of 16 already know what the King Power Stadium can do. Here they can go for everything.
“I’ve never seen a club similar in my entire career. I would not be surprised if Leicester progresses. Anything can happen, I’m sure a lot of people would be surprised if this happens, but I won’t be.”
Leicester City will be hoping to reproduce the display they showed against Sevilla last month, when they beat the Spanish side 3-2 on aggregate.
It was Schmeichel’s son Kasper who was the stand out player for Leicester City over the two legs as the Denmark international saved penalties in both ties against Sevilla.
