While Leicester City aren’t exactly setting the Premier League alight anymore, last season’s performances from some of their players haven’t been forgotten, especially those of Riyad Mahrez.

The Algerian winger, scooping up seemingly every individual Premier League trophy under the sun, has been nominated for the African Ballon d’Or, something we covered in detail last month.

With the shortlist now cut down to five players, which he is still a part of, the Leicester star remains a strong favourite, going up against his now teammate and compatriot Islam Slimani.

The target man, who was bought for a record fee by the Premier League champions over the summer from Sporting CP in Portugal, has had a solid start to his career in England, scoring four goals in his first nine appearances.

Speaking to Le Buteur in Algeria, former Rangers defender Madjid Bougherra spoke about who his favourite for the award was.

He said: “I hope it’ll be an Algerian player (laughs). Slimani knows that I hold him in high regard, but I reckon it’ll be Riyad Mahrez who will win this Ballon d’Or, especially with what he did with Leicester last season.”

Just in case you’d forgotten, the 25-year-old set the league alight last season, scoring 17 goals and assisting his teammates 10 times over the course of 37 appearances. From the wing.
