Former Netherlands midfielder Willem van Hanegem has picked out just four players who did themselves justice in the game with Luxembourg last night. Danny Blind’s side earned themselves a 3-1 victory, but Van Hanegem thinks only Bart Ramselaar, Virgil van Dijk, Georginio Wijnaldum and Jeffrey Bruma played anywhere near the expected level.

In his column with AD.nl, Van Hanegem said he was impressed with debutant Ramselaar because he was prepared to work for the team, and showed intelligence in his game. Along with the PSV star, the Dutchman thought Southampton’s Van Dijk, Liverpool summer signing Wijnaldum and PSV’s Bruma were the only other players to turn up against Luxembourg, which he thinks isn’t good enough against a weak team.

“Ramselaar is hard working. I think that having such a player gives us some hope. A smart football player, we are going to have fun with. Next were Wijnaldum, Bruma and Van Dijk also nice. Four players, that’s far too little against such a weak opponent,” said the Dutchman.

Van Dijk has become one of the Netherlands key players and a leader since making his debut last year. The former Celtic star has also been one of Southampton’s standout players so far this season.

Wijnaldum joined Liverpool in the summer form Newcastle United, and has impressed for his new club so far this season. However, the midfielder came in for flak in the Dutch media following the Belgium game last week when they suggested he doesn’t replicate his club form for his country.
