Dutch football legend Willem van Hanegem believes Tottenham Hotspur forward Vincent Janssen should be dropped to the bench for the Netherlands’ upcoming games. Danny Blind has often picked Janssen as his first choice striker, but with the form of Sporting Lisbon’s Bas Dost the Tottenham star’s place is under threat.

SoccerNews have reported on comments Van Hanegem made to FOX Sports when asked if Janssen or Dost should be Blind’s first choice striker.

Van Hanegem said Janssen is getting little playing time at Tottenham this season, whilst Dost has been banging in the goals for Sporting Lisbon. The Dutchman believes Janssen is a nice person, but there now needs to be questions asked about his place in the national team.

“Someone sitting on the bench at Tottenham Hotspur and occasionally allowed to play up to five or ten minutes in a match of some League Cup, or someone who has 24 goals in the Portuguese league… He’s a very nice guy, but let’s get real?” said the former Netherlands international.

Janssen has found if difficult to hold down a place in the Tottenham team since his move from AZ last summer. The 22-year-old has scored just a handful of goals, and was even snubbed yesterday for the Southampton clash, despite the absence of Harry Kane.
