Celtic legend Bertie Auld believes his former club can overcome Manchester City when the two sides meet in the Champions League tomorrow night. Auld was part of the Celtic team which beat Leeds United on route to the 1970 European Cup final despite the Scottish side being underdogs.

Speaking to the Scottish Sun, the 1967 European Cup winner said Celtic are still a big club, and have shown in the past they can rise to the occasion when playing major clubs.

Auld has compared Wednesday’s game to the one he was involved in 1970 against a confident Leeds United. The former Scotland international believes they weren’t favourites to progress to the final, but they beat them home and away.

“Celtic are still a big club and big clubs rise to the big occasion. I think back to our European Cup semi-final against Leeds in 1970. That was one of the best experiences of my career. Leeds were confident but we beat them home and away in a European semi-final. We weren’t favourites for that tie either, but it shows you what can happen,” said the former Celtic player.

Celtic will be hoping to bounce back from their humiliation at the hand of Barcelona when they were demolished 7-0 at the Camp Nou. The SPL side will go into the game facing a Manchester City side which has won the last ten games, and will be clear favourites to take all three points.
