The trial involving Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino over the Is Arenas stadium scandal has been rearranged for early next year. The charges against Cellino were due to go before court this week, although the Leeds United chief wasn’t present when the case was adjourned.
La Nuova Sardegna have revealed the case has been rearranged for 2nd February 2017 due to the judges being changed. It’s also been reported the prosecution may again have to go through documentation relevant to the case, which may involve going through the evidence with the witnesses. The second hearing will take place 6th March.
Cellino faces the wrath of the Italian justice system over the building of Cagliari’s ground Stadio Is Arenas. Charges have been brought against the Leeds United chief and several public officials for their role in the construction of the stadium.
In total eleven accused face charges over attempted embezzlement, unauthorised building and a non-compliance with the public authorities. Cellino himself was charged with attempted embezzlement for his role in the construction of Stadio Is Arenas.
Cellino sold the Serie A side in 2014 when he purchased Leeds United, but his reign has been controversial. The process looks likely to continue to drag on for some time yet as we predicted last month.
Depending on any subsequent conviction, the case could impact Cellino’s role at Leeds United.
