For some months, two River Plate players have been repeatedly linked to English clubs

It all started with West Ham, who made an offer for Gonzalo Montiel back in January. The Hammers tried to get the right-back on a loan deal, and are expected to make a new bid for a permanent move now.

And since it became clear that Leeds United would be promoted to the Premier League, they started being linked to Lucas Martinez Quarta, although a bid for the defender was never reported.

Even though that may sound like the two players could depart for England this summer, reports from Argentina now say that only one should leave River Plate.

El Intransigente writes that River Plate are only in need of US$10m, so one sale would be enough. That’s why the representatives of each player have started a ‘war’ to see who can get a transfer first.

The outlet says that West Ham are the strongest suitors for the signing of Montiel, although they have competition from Bayer Leverkusen, Roma and Schalke 04.

Meanwhile, the list of competitors for the transfer of Lucas Martinez Quarta includes Inter Milan, Leeds United, AC Milan, Real Betis and Valencia.

The story makes it now look like a real race for these players, although we still find it unlikely that River Plate would be able to hold both in case two good bids arrive.
