Werder Bremen goalkeeper coach Christian Vander has told the German media he’s been taken aback by Jiri Pavlenka’s first season at the club.

Pavlenka signed for the Bundesliga side in the last window, which ultimately led to Felix Wiedwald joining Leeds United.

It was well documented former Werder Bremen coach Alexander Nouri was bringing in Pavlenka from Slavia Prague to replace Wiedwald, despite the 27 year old now Leeds player being the German side’s No.1 last season.

The decision to let Widewald join Leeds United was questioned repeatedly in the German media, but after a shaky start Pavelnka has been one of Werder Bremen’s standout players this season, which has been backed up by Vander.

Fussball News have reported on comments the Werder Bremen coach made about the progress Pavlenka has made: “It was not clear that Pavlas would play so good from the start. With the potential that Pavlas brings, we hope that he will stay with us for the next few years.”

In contrast Wiedwald has struggled at Leeds United, despite a promising start to the season. Now back in the starting line-up, Wiedwald has both looked nervous at times and showed glimpses of why Leeds were so happy to sign him, and the goalkeeper probably needs some faith being shown in him now.

Pavlenka had a shaky start to the season, and if Werder had dropped him then they probably wouldn’t be so happy with their goalkeeper situation now.

It’s been said in Germany much more is expected of Pavlenka in the coming years, whilst Wiedwald is seen as the finished article.
