Ilia Gruev’s move to Leeds United this summer is being celebrated at Werder Bremen, as it’s helped them to a “significant increase” in their balance sheet for the last year.
BILD cover the situation today, explaining that Werder CEO Klaus Filbry presented the club’s balance sheet for 2023/24 on Monday, and it was good news.
The German club have managed a small profit of €2.2m, an improvement on the year before when they posted a loss of £3.8m due to a lack of transfer revenues.
The club had set themselves a target of €2-5m profit this year thanks to the sale of Niclas Füllkrug and were able to achieve this thanks to Gruev’s move to Leeds.
“The transfers of Ilia Gruev and Niklas Schmidt also contributed to the significant increase,” reported Filbry. Gruev joined Leeds in a €6.5m move at the end of August while Schmidt went to Toulouse for €2.5m at the beginning of August.
Profits could have been higher for the club too if they had managed to offload Naby Keïta. Instead, they have been stuck with the midfielder and a provision for his has to be deducted from any profits in case of impending losses.
That’s just a small negative on what is being seen as a big positive at Werder, though, with Gruev’s move to Leeds helping considerably on that front.
