Cagliari forward Marco Borriello has told the Italian media he’s prepared to remain with the Serie A club. The former Italy international has impressed for the Sardinian club this season, and subsequently was linked with a move to Leeds United in January.
Speaking to Unione Sarda, Borriello was asked about his future, and whether he would be playing for Cagliari next season. The 34-year-old confirmed he would like to stay at the club, but there are conditions in his contract which could prevent this. Borriello revealed he will be given a new contract at the end of the season as long as they remain in Serie A.
“The contract provides an automatic renewal in the event of salvation. I’m here in Cagliari, I’d like to stay,” said the Leeds United target.
During the last window we covered claims from Italy that Leeds United were looking at the possibility of signing Borriello, with owner Massimo Cellino prepared to raid his former club. The former Italy international has been in impressive form for the Serie A side this season following his move in the summer transfer window.
Leeds United boss Garry Monk will be hoping to bolster his attacking options in the summer, but a move for Borriello would be a surprise. Also with his failed loan spell with West Ham United a few seasons it could be a risky signing for Leeds United.
The Leeds United links will have come from the Cellino connection, and perhaps the club’s fans should hope Cagliari stay up so there’s no danger of the move actually happening.
