Real Madrid are going to miss Kiko Casilla.

Not on the pitch, that would be taking goodbye plaudits too far, but the goodwill being sent the player’s way following his move to Leeds United shows a genuine affection for the goalkeeper.

Casilla is Catalan, from Tarragona, but moved to Real Madrid’s youth system before the age of 16. He played for the club’s C team, which no longer exists, and then the B team, now known as the Castilla.

From there he went to Espanyol, on a journey which would eventually lead him back to Real Madrid in 2014.

Friday’s edition of Marca has an article on the player’s transfer to Leeds United, and explains all the public wishes from players and club officials are genuine.

It’s thought the 32 year old has been ‘essential’ in the club’s dressing room during his period there, and therefore contributed to success.

He’s helped build up a chemistry, and the Spanish newspaper say Casilla always reminded new signings about the history of the club they’d joined and what it meant to wear the shirt.

Now it’s someone’s turn to do similar with the new Leeds United goalkeeper.
