Diego Llorente’s continued battle to get himself into top fitness for Leeds United is something which has been a theme of his time at the club.
Signed from Real Sociedad in September 2020, the defender had to wait until December to made his Premier League debut for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
Once fully fit, he was regular for Leeds United, yet has struggled again this season and that’s seen his Spain hopes take a blow.
Finally, Llorente was recently able to complete his first Premier League game of the season, and won the match for Leeds, scoring the only goal of the game against Watford.
There’s obviously interest in Spain in how the 28-year-old is getting on. Should he manage to put his injury woes behind him then there’s a reasonable chance Luis Enrique will select Llorente for the World Cup, so there’s a lot at stake.
Speaking to Marca, the Leeds man showed his appreciation towards the manager: “From the first day he took command of the national team he has given me a lot of confidence. It is another reason why I try to give a good level and be recovered as soon as possible to be able to be in the national team. For me, every time I go, it is something very beautiful and very big.”
Of course, Marca also wanted to know how things are going in England, and Llorente told them: “From the first day I have had a good reception from the fans. It must be a common factor in England, but here everything is lived with great passion and I liked how there’s encouragement in good times and in bad times.”
The defender added that it was important to him to be able to contribute against Watford, and that he’s happy Leeds United fans are back at games.
