Spanish lower division club CD Castellon will turn 95 years of age in July, but there’s a real chance they could go into liquidation before then and cease to exist.
Player’s wages are going unpaid and have done for some time and there’s the traditional unpaid tax bills. A payment of €100k is due imminently via the club’s current president David Cruz, report El Mundo, and without it Castellon could be dissolved.
Leeds United’s Pablo Hernandez has been trying to help and even launched a takeover effort. Hernandez’s former Castellon and then Valencia teammate Angel Dealbert was part of the plans.
The 34 year old now plays for Lugo, the club Leeds United took Alfonso Pedraza from during the January transfer window.
Cruz has rejected the takeover efforts from Hernandez and Dealbert, and he’s encouraging a Hong Kong investment firm to make a move. That led to Leeds United’s Hernandez announcing that his efforts to save the club had come to a dead end, with Cruz putting too many obstacles in the way.
There seems little obvious financial reason for an investment in Castellon from the Hong Kong group, whereas for Hernandez and Dealbert it’s a matter of the heart.
Hernandez, 31 years of age, sees his Leeds United contract expire in June, with the club having the right to extend it. Should the Castellon battle to survive get to that point, then perhaps a return to Spanish football, and another attempt at taking over Castellon could be on the cards.
