Last Friday, a story emerged from the depths of the Sardinian local Italian media, with claims that Leeds United had been ‘offered’ Polish defender Bartosz Salamon by his agent as part of a potential deal taking Giuseppe Bellusci to Cagliari.

The 27-year-old spent last season on loan with Empoli, where he made 33 appearances, scoring one goal, and is now being linked with a permanent return to Italy.

Leeds clearly wouldn’t be against the idea of seeing the defender leave, seeing as they found very little use for him last year, and if they could get someone else in return, that would be a bonus. But Derby County may well be standing in their way.

Corriere dello Sport on Monday explain that Salamon is now down as a ‘target’ for Leeds United, who are likely to face competition from Palermo in Italy, but ‘especially’ from Derby County.

The Rams seem keen to bolster their defence this season, having already brought in Curtis Davies and Andre Wisdom from Hull and Liverpool respectively, and another centre-back, most likely to take the vastly under-utilised 33-year-old Jason Shackell’s spot.

Whether this is just a simple rehash of the aforementioned La Nuova Sardegna story, and the ‘proposal’ has now turned into ‘interest’, remains to be seen, but there could be more developments in the coming days as Leeds United continue their busy summer.
