Ibai Gomez is on the verge of returning to Athletic Club Bilbao, bringing to an end to Leeds United’s efforts to sign the player.

AS report that Leeds are one of the clubs who have been making efforts ‘in recent months’ towards signing the Alaves player, whose contract expires at the end of June.

Marcelo Bielsa had the winger work under him at Athletic, and approaching the January window there was confidence a deal could be done in the winter market.

Leicester City, Real Sociedad, Celta Vigo and Sporting were all credited with interest, whilst Alaves were doing their best to try and get a renewal agreed.

AS say only the final details of the transfer need to be confirmed before the deal can become official and Gomez return to the Basque club.

Athletic are said to be paying €4m for the player, which is less than half of his €10m clause. Alaves are under pressure to drop the price to avoid losing Gomez for nothing in the next window.
