Garry Monk could be sacked by Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino despite beating Blackburn Rovers last night, according to claims in the British media. Monk has recently been under pressure due to poor results, and speculation has grown that he could be shown the door after former England manager Steve McClaren was seen at Elland Road last night.
Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay has confirmed via social media McClaren was in the stands last night to watch Leeds United beat Blackburn Rovers 4-1. The 55-year-old has been without a job since he was sacked by Newcastle United earlier in the year, but this week told the BBC he wants to return to football.
McClaren has recently enrolled in a Sports Directorship course at Manchester University in preparation for when his time in management comes to an end. However, McClaren believes he still has a few years left in him, and would prefer to manage in England after turning down offers from abroad.
“I still have a few years left in me yet on the field. I have had offers from abroad, but nothing that appeals. I don’t want to go to China. I feel I have something to offer here. If not here, then in Europe,” said the Former Manchester United coach.
With just two wins from their opening seven league games Monk is under pressure to keep his job at Leeds United. With Cellino’s reputation for sacking his managers it wouldn’t be surprise if Monk exits the club despite last night’s win.
However, McClaren hanging around before the event would be pretty brazen, so perhaps if he was to get an Elland Road role, it would be more related to his current studying.
