NEC have lost out in the race to sign Genk winger Ayub Masika despite the player holding talks with the Dutch side this week. Masika was being lined up to replace Anthony Limbombe, which could have implications for Leeds United in their pursuit of the NEC star.

Voetbal International have confirmed Masika has turned down the chance to sign for NEC after he took the decision to remain in Belgium. The Kenyan has instead joined Belgian side Lierse SK on a three-year contract following NEC’s efforts to sign the youngster in the past few months.

With NEC facing the prospect of losing Limbombe this summer Masika was seen in the Dutch media as an ideal replacement, and now the Erdedivise side will have to look elsewhere.

Leeds United will now been hoping NEC can find an attacker to come in for Limbombe after being strongly linked with the 21-year-old in the past 12 months.

The Championship side failed in their attempts to sign Limbombe last summer, but in the past few weeks claims have resurfaced that Leeds United are still interested in the player.

Limbombe was one of the standout players in the Dutch league last season, and was instrumental in NEC finishing in a respectable 10th position in the table.
