Leeds United co-owner Massimo Cellino has been accused of using mafia tactics when in charge of Cagliari. Cellino ruled the Italian club for other twenty years before purchasing Leeds United in 2014.
Prominent Sardinian football journalist Bruno Corda has said the only time he felt his worked being interfered with was when he dealt with the now Leeds United shareholder.
Speaking to Sardegna Live, Corda said: “My biggest regret was when I had to interrupt my work, not for reasons caused by the job, but by a kind of ‘mafia’ which had entered the world of football. Unscrupulous presidents, in this case, Massimo Cellino, who protected himself from criticism using mafia tactics.”
Cellino would eventually sell the Sardinian club when he purchased Leeds United, but not without first fleeing to Miami to protect himself from disgruntled Cagliari fans. Since Cellino arrived at Leeds United he’s faced the wrath of the Elland Road faithful, which resulted in protests against him last season.
The Italian now only owns a 50% stake in Leeds United, and has been repeatedly linked to a takeover at Brescia. It was also reported in Italy last week that Cellino could instead look to take a stake in Reggiana.
