Leeds United may be given another shot at signing Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven next summer, as the Dutch club need to sell to resolve their financial problems.
That’s according to Voetbal International, relayed by Soccer News, who cover the situation at the club today.
Gakpo was heavily linked with a move away from PSV for most of the summer following a superb campaign domestically and in Europe last season.
Leeds United joined the party late on, making a bid on deadline day and even sending a plane to Eindhoven with Victor Orta on board to try and get a deal over the line.
That never happened as Gakpo elected to stay where he was, but it seems he won’t be staying at PSV long-term.
They explain that PSV need to sell either Gakpo or teammate Ibrahim Sangare before July 1st next year due to the club’s financial situation.
There’s no detailed explanation of the financial issues in question but the notion is that PSV need to balance the books for this year and a big-money sale would help them to do so.
That could give Leeds another shot at Gakpo, if they remain interested, which should be the case given he’s been in fine form again this season.
They’ll still likely have to pay a huge figure to secure his signature, and convince him on the move too, but the opportunity is certainly there given PSV’s need to sell.
