Francesco Marroccu has today officially left Ascoli after just one season as their sporting director. Leeds United have been linked with Marroccu in recent weeks, following Massimo Cellino’s attempts to bring him in last summer.
Piceno Time have confirmed in the last hour Marroccu is no longer the sporting director of Ascoli following meetings with the club’s leaders earlier in the month.
Despite Ascoli avoiding relegation to Lega Pro last season Marroccu came to a mutual agreement with Ascoli’s president that he would no longer remain at the club. This means Leeds United can move in on Marroccu, with claims he’s already in talks with an unnamed English club.
Despite the Ascoli media not revealing who the English club is more than likely it will be Leeds United. This month there were claims in Italy that Cellino had contacted Marroccu with regards to taking the sporting director role at Leeds United.
Marroccu previously worked under the Leeds United owner at Cagliari, and a reunion does look to be on the cards.
Leeds United have also been linked with Nicola Salerno in the past 24 hours following reports he’s set to leave Watford after just one season.
