Leeds United striker Wilfried Gnonto ‘would have loved’ to join Freiburg this summer and even had an agreement in place with them at one point.
That’s according to BILD, who say the forward was one of the German side’s ‘dream solutions’ to reinforce their forward line.
The newspaper explains that Freiburg had targeted a striker this summer, but that player did not end up arriving despite efforts to do so.
The player made it clear he ‘would have loved to come’ and had agreed a deal with them. In fact, they were the only club he struck an agreement with this summer.
However, Freiburg ended up pulling out of potential negotiations after learning Leeds’ ‘excessive transfer demands’ of over €25m. That was €5m more than the ‘absolute Freiburg pain limit’.
Gnonto had hoped for a deal to happen right until the end of the window, but it never happened because Leeds absolutely refused to consent to it.
Thus, the deal was abandoned, and Freiburg never got their man, despite the interest from both parties in making it happen.
