Mateusz Klich made his second start of the season for Leeds United in their 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the EFL Cup. His first start came against Barnsley in the same competition.
The Poland international is waiting for his first league start of the season and has been restricted to 11 substitute appearances so far.
Klich’s failure to enjoy game time at Leeds has had a direct impact on his place in the national team for the 2022 World Cup.
Poland manager Czesław Michniewicz announced his squad for the FIFA tournament on Thursday and Jesse Marsch’s man didn’t manage to make it to the final list.
According to TVP Sport, the 32-year-old didn’t fit into the national team manager’s plans, which saw him play for 100 minutes for Poland after Michniewicz took charge in January. In addition to this, his situation was made difficult due to restricted game time at Leeds.
On deciding to leave the Whites midfielder out of the squad, Michniewicz said: “There are Bielik and Krychowiak, and next to them may be Szymański and Żurkowski. In addition, there are others who can be tens – Zieliński and Szymański Sebastian. There was no room for Klich, although it was not an easy decision. We watched him to the end.”
Journalist Tomasz Włodarczyk was disappointed with Michniewicz for not taking the Leeds midfielder to Qatar.
“The biggest surprise for me is the lack of Mateusz Klich. He may feel the most disappointed that he will not be there, because in my opinion he has the skills to give the team something. We talked about creative players and Klich is a footballer who could give a boost,” Włodarczyk told Meczyki’s YouTube channel.
