Leeds United are in contention to return to the Premier League via direct promotion this season.

The Championship club dropped to the third spot, a point behind second placed Sheffield United and two behind leaders Burnley.

Leeds, meanwhile, have started working on improving their squad for next season. That’s according to Foot Mercato, who state the Whites have identified Montpellier HSC’s Modibo Sagnan as a target.

The centre-back joined the Ligue 1 club from FC Utrecht in the winter 2024 market. He’s been a regular this season, making 25 league appearances, and is also able to operate as a left-back.

Montpellier have four wins from 28 league games and are currently at the bottom of the table. They have had a disappointing season so far, but the Mali international’s displays have has seen him attract Leeds’ attention.

The defender ‘appeals to’ Daniel Farke’s side, likely because of his versatility, physicality and ‘authoritative in duels’. The report states Leeds are ‘keen’ on signing the 25-year-old in the summer window.

Sagnan’s contract lasts until 2028, but Foot Mercato explain he could quickly move on, especially to England, after this season. There’s no mention of Montpellier’s request or the fee Leeds could offer for the player.
