Leeds United may have been handed a boost in their pursuit of defender Sebastijan Kerkez, with their interest causing issues for Benfica.
That’s according to Record, who say that Leeds and Borussia Dortmund ‘pressure’ the young defender and have thus led him away from Portugal.
They explain that Benfica have been targeting Kerkez for a while, looking to add him to their left flank as a replacement for Alex Grimaldo.
They have already tried to ‘seduce’ him to moving to the club, speaking to the player and his father about their offer and the project they’re undertaking.
Indeed, his father had travelled to Lisbon to meet with the club, getting to know the project, the conditions at Benfica’s campus and the places where his son could live. He was pleased by everything he saw.
However, the player’s future is yet to be decided as Benfica are not the only club in the running, with Leeds and Borussia Dortmund refusing to ‘let him go’.
How they are doing that isn’t mentioned specifically but it appears they are aware of the work being done by Benfica to try and lure him there and are counteracting that as best as they can.
Whether that means he ends up joining Leeds is another matter, particularly given they are fighting relegation in the Premier League and their rivals are Champions League teams.
It seems work is being done, though, and they aren’t giving up the chance of signing the left-back in the summer.
