Back in January, a report from Portugal stated Benfica ‘dream’ of bringing Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Nélson Semedo back to the club. The defender was at the Portuguese club between 2012 and 2017.
It was also explained the 29-year-old is open to studying the possibility of leaving the Premier League side for the Eagles in the summer.
Fast forward to April and the Wolves right-back has told Eleven Sports, relayed by A Bola, about his desire to return to his former club.
“I already mentioned that it would be good to be able to return to Benfica, I leave the doors always open,” he said.
The Portugal international’s deal expires at the end of this season and Julen Lopetegui’s side have an option to extend it until 2025, which they haven’t exercised it so far.
Semedo has been the first-choice right-back for Wolves this season’s it’s likely the option will be used.
The fullback saw his Wolves teammate, Gonçalo Guedes, return to Benfica on a loan deal in the winter market. The former Barcelona man shared his views on the winger’s decision to join the Eagles.
“His [Guedes] return to Benfica made me happy, I’m not going to lie. I know he really wanted to come back and he’s very happy there,” Semedo explained.
Benfica are leading the league table, seven points ahead of second placed FC Porto. On the former’s season so far, the Wolves defender said: “Benfica have had a very good campaign, and at the national level they have also been doing very well.”
“I am very happy to see Benfica at the level we are used to being and hopefully we can win good titles this year.”
