The drama over a European Super League brought Barcelona’s finances to a much wider audience than had known the full extent of the problems previously.
In the weeks after Joan Laporta’s election as president of the Catalan club, there’d been some optimism around the media covering Barcelona, and the signing of Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland was presented as a possibility.
That was quickly forgotten in the days following the collapse of the ESL, and it’s even been questioned whether the La Liga side can afford to keep Lionel Messi at the Camp Nou beyond the end of this season.
New investment is clearly needed, and El Chiringuito now report Laporta is close to securing a €500m sponsorship boost for Barcelona. There’s no firm details on what that will cover, but it’s claimed such a deal would allow the club to renew Messi’s contract, as well as providing money to sign Neymar from PSG.
It again feels like an optimistic slant on things, and the coming weeks will see whether this is concrete or yet another dream of solving Barcelona’s financial problems.
