Anderlecht have shelved any plans to sign Matz Sels, reports Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad on Thursday. With Sels clearly not someone Rafael Benitez feels he can rely on at Newcastle United, an exit this summer would make a great deal of sense.
A return to Belgian football where Sels was, not so long ago, voted goalkeeper of the season, would provide a chance for the player to get his career back on track. However, the finances of a move would be difficult, given Newcastle paid a good fee, and Sels may also have to take a drop in wages.
Anderlecht had been interested and recently sounded Sels out about a potential transfer, wanting to get his opinion before deciding on making a move or not.
Het Nieuwsblad say the goalkeeper didn’t get back to Anderlecht, and that’s made the club’s mid up and Sels is no longer one of their summer targets.
Newcastle United will have to find another solution for the goalkeeper.
