Bought from Zulte Waregem in 2015 for £1m, Theo Bongonda is finally coming into his own at Celta Vigo, with a goal and three assists in his last six games for the La Liga side.
Used relatively sporadically last season due to Nolito’s success, the 21-year-old has now become an integral part of Eduardo Berizzo’s plans, attracting interest from abroad in the process.
On the 10th of January, Cadena Ser in Spain reported that Manchester City had an interest in the young Belgian winger, scouting him properly for the first time, impressed by his speed and willingness to backtrack.
Also reported to be tracking the progress of both Rúben Blanco and Jonny, Pep Guardiola might have to wait a bit longer before acquiring the services of Theo Bongonda, according to the player himself.
Speaking to Radio Galega, relayed by Walfoot, the player talked about the rumours sending him to the Etihad.
He said: “They are false. For now, I have to focus on my football, because things can go very quickly.”
So, no transfer to Manchester City for Bongonda just yet, but if Pep Guardiola is tracking the player, expect a few more stories appearing over the coming months.
