Vincent Kompany has now been warned by Bayern Munich to adapt his style of play, as they seemingly fear a repeat of what happened at Burnley.
That’s according to BILD, who report that the former Burnley boss has been told to adapt his style after the humbling 4-1 defeat to Barcelona.
Kompany left Burnley for Bayern in the summer in undoubtedly one of the most surprising managerial appointments of the last ten years.
He arrived in Bavaria with something of a dinged reputation after his sole year in the Premier League with the Clarets, which had seen them relegated at the first time of asking and eight points from safety.
Kompany took much of the blame for how the season panned out as he refused to adapt or change the free flowing, attacking football that had seen his side romp to success in the Championship the previous year.
He’s taken that style with him to Bayern but had mixed success so far, enjoying big wins over smaller sides but losing to Aston Villa and Barcelona in the Champions League.
The latter destroyed Bayern 4-1 in a chastening game this week, with the result leading to plenty of criticism for Kompany and efforts to point out similar problems with his style were clear at Burnley.
BILD now report that the Belgian boss has been told his ‘attractive, risky style of play’ must be ‘corrected’ to resolve the defensive errors in his team.
According to their information the style of play was discussed ‘at the top level’ and Kompany ha been warned he needs to reorganise so that Bayern can win the ‘important games’ again.
They’re not calling for a complete departure from the ‘offensive defence’ and ‘mega-pressing’ but believe Kompany needs to refine his system so that ‘huge gaps’ stop appearing in his defence.
Those in charge of the club remain convinced by what they’ve seen, particularly sports director Max Eberl, who was vocal in his support after the Barcelona defeat.
But the fact that former manager Hansi Flick ‘completely undermined’ Kompany’s style in that 4-1 defeat hasn’t gone unnoticed and now Bayern want change.
